Hi, Ian in New Zealand here, we just had our Kakapo plate smashed when a bird entered the house! Sad day as it was special for my wife……..I have actually heard this largest of all ground Parrots “booming” on Little Barrier Island, its an uncanny sound. Are you interested in selling this plate?
Hello Ian. Firstly, along with all ceramics collectors, I’m really sorry to hear about your plate. It’s the thing that we all dread, even with the humblest of items. For special pieces it’s even worse.
I’m afraid that at the moment I don’t want to sell my plate, but thank you for asking. I think my daughter has it marked as one she wants to inherit.
I would suggest that you register with thesaleroom.com and easylive.com and add an alert for “moorcroft and kakapo”. I have about 30 alerts set up on each site. Some alerts stay silent for months but then pop up with a match. If you do set up alerts, set them to scan twice a week because some auction houses post catalogs really late and a weekly search can miss things. I have seen the Kakapo plate come up for sale occasionally. There was also a gorgeous trial vase with the design that came up once. I wish I’d bid more on it.
As for hearing a Kakapo in the wild, I will remain forever jealous. The last I read the population was growing, which is great news.
